Fire Rated MDF is manufactured in accordance with EN Euro class B and class C and intended for internal use in public areas such as hotel foyers, theatres and other institutional buildings where fire retardant materials are stipulated by Building Regulations. During manufacture a pink/light red dye is incorporated for identification purposes.
For all other purposes FR MDF should be considered to have similar properties to those of standard MDF, such as ease of machining and cutting.
Key Features
Meets EN Euro Class B and C fire retardant standards
Same mechanical and machining qualities as Standard MDF
Environmental
MDF is manufactured from wood fibres, mixed with resin and waxes which are then hot pressed to the required thickness. These wood fibres are sourced from environmentally friendly forest thinnings, recycled wood/pallets, and sawdust. All our suppliers provide FSC and PEFC certification.
Safety
All dust can be harmful if inhaled or ingested, MDF dust is no exception. Correct PPE such as dust masks and goggles should be worn as a matter of routine. Workshop machines should be fitted with appropriate dust extraction equipment. If not in a workshop environment then MDF should be worked in a well ventilated area. The use of a respirator fitted with P2 filter units is highly recommended.
With veneer finish, FR-MDF drops to fire class C or lower.
Technical
Intended to be used wherever fire protection is the first priority (e.g interior finishes for public buildings, boat & yacht building, the automotive industry, exhibition stands, etc), the flame retardant panels are classified in accordance with BS EN 13501 Euroclasses B and C.
This is an internal product with non decorative surfaces.
To meet the European classifications, the rate of fire growth, total heat release, smoke production and burning droplets are measured by testing samples of the products to EN 13823 (The SBI test) and EN 11925-2 (The SFI test) and, for wood-based panels, classified as Euroclass B or C in accordance with BS EN13501-1. Euroclass B is higher technical class than Euroclass C and, therefore by definition, if material conforms to Euroclass B then it will exceed the requirements for Euroclass C.
Please check with your local building control that this product meets with current Class B regulations and is suitable for your project. Atlantic Timber cannot be responsible for misinterpretation leading to incorrect usage.
